Airplane Stand

The challenge: A friend of mine enjoys playing a board game (Axis Allies - A WWII Strategy Game). If you are into the game, I think you will see in the photos below he has added decals (he designs and makes) to his game pieces. He wanted some stands for his planes. The planes have a small magnet embedded in them, so they can attach to the correct.

The approach: The base is made out of 300 series stainless. The rod is 400 series stainless to allow the magnet in the plane to be effective. To make these parts I would take the 300 series cylinder and mount it in the fixture pictured below. This was the first time I used multiple WCS (work coordinate system). The CNC machine was setup to make 6 bases at a time from the rod. I would machine the hex base, then engrave it, drill it for the rod and then cut it off. The next part would use a new WCS (G54, G55, G56 …) until 6 parts had been made.
